Although his family witnessed another episode of gross hematuria few weeks before admission, urinalysis on admission showed no evidence of hematuria. An initial abdominal ultrasonography showed normal size and echogenicity of both kidneys without definite focal lesion. However, computed tomography of the abdomen revealed entrapment of a retroaortic left renal vein between the aorta and the vertebral column (Fig.1), indicating posterior nutcracker syndrome. After consultation, it was decided that he should undergo conservative follow-up. The retroaortic left renal vein, also known as posterior nutcracker syndrome, is a rare congenital phenomenon. Because patients with Down syndrome usually have a decreased risk for vascular anomalies because of increased vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors from an extra copy of chromosome 21, posterior nutcracker syndr-

An Unusual Course of Segmental Renal Artery Displays a Rare Case of Hilar Nutcracker Phenomenon
Nutcracker phenomenon or renal vein entrapment is classically seen as a compression of renal vein in between abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery with patients being asymptomatic or clinically manifested in the form of nutcracker syndrome as proteinuria, hematuria, flank pain, pelvic congestion in women, and varicocele in men. In this report, we are presenting a case of rare variant o...
متن کاملNutcracker phenomenon or nutcracker syndrome?
Sir, Chang et al. [1] describe a young patient in whom a nutcracker syndrome was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography. Patients with nutcracker phenomenon are usually young and slim, and the diagnosis can be made by ultrasound. There are established criteria for the diagnosis of the entrapment of the left renal vein by two-dimensional ultrasonography and Do...
متن کاملPosterior Nutcracker Syndrome with Left Renal Vein Duplication: A Rare Cause of Haematuria in a 12-Year-Old Boy
The nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is a rare cause of haematuria. It embraces an extended nonpathognomonic spectrum of symptoms that imply a difficult diagnosis. Ultimately it may be associated with substantial morbidity and even life-threatening events. We report a rare cause if a 12-year-old boy who presented with a history of frequent intermittent episodes of painless constant haematuria. The cys...
متن کاملA Model Example: Coexisting Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome and the Nutcracker Phenomenon
Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare cause of gastrointestinal obstruction, caused by external compression of the third part of the duodenum by the SMA. It may be associated with the Nutcracker phenomenon: external compression of the left renal vein. To our knowledge, there are few reports in the literature describing the coexistence of these two conditions and so we take this op...
متن کاملAnterior and posterior nutcracker syndrome accompanying left circumaortic renal vein in an adolescent: case report.
The left renal vein (LRV) has many developmental variations; the two most common are the circumaortic and the retrocaval. Anterior nutcracker syndrome is the compression of the LRV between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery, whereas posterior nutcracker syndrome occurs between the vertebral column and the aorta. An adolescent male (aged 16 years) was referred to the emergency department f...
